Why We Added Bombs

Developer Journal · impulse control

What we did: Introduced red bomb drops that must fall untouched. Tapping one costs a life and breaks streak.

Why: Pure “tap everything” games train speed only. We needed a no-go signal so players practice restraint under the same motor urgency as go targets.

What happened: Early builds with too many bombs felt unfair; too few made them decorative. We paced bomb introduction into mid Calm Seas and ramped density later.

What we learned: Telegraphed silhouettes matter more than raw count. Players accept harsh penalties when recognition is readable a beat before contact.

Implementation note

Bombs are decoys, not targets: the game tracks a bomb dodge when one reaches the bottom untouched. That rule rewards restraint and makes the mechanic observable in the HUD rather than a random punishment.
