As visual events arrive faster, people usually become less accurate. That is not a moral failing — it is a fundamental tradeoff in sensorimotor control.

Why mistakes rise with speed

Anticipation: help and hazard

Predicting “when” something will appear can shave tens of milliseconds. Predicting wrongly produces false starts — the same failure mode as tapping before green in a reaction test, or tapping a bomb that looks like a drop for a frame.

Visual targets matter

Large, high-contrast, predictable targets support both speed and accuracy. Small, fading, or decoy targets force classification work (choice RT) on top of simple speed.

What “faster” usually costs

In a pure simple-RT task, rushing mostly means false starts. In a classification task (go vs no-go), rushing raises wrong taps. In a precision task (hit a small target), rushing raises misses and “Okay” instead of Perfect. The same person can look “fast” on one test and “sloppy” on another — because the required accuracy constraint changed.

Focus Drop as a worked example

Campaign levels increase drop speed, concurrency, and special-drop density. Scoring further punishes late catches (0.6× height) while rewarding early precise taps. The design goal is to make the speed–accuracy tradeoff visible in score and lives — not merely “harder numbers.”
