Special Drops & Tactics
Bombs, phantoms, speed, tiny, golden, and freeze — what to do and when
Not every falling object in Focus Drop is a friendly water drop. Specials appear across Campaign chapters, Endless waves, and many Daily Challenges. Misreading one special usually costs a life from your pool of three — or breaks a streak that was carrying a reachScore run. This guide covers each type with recognition cues and concrete tactics you can use from Danger Zone through Zen Master.
Bombs — never tap
Bombs are red, explosive-looking hazards. Never tap them. Let them fall past the bottom. Tapping a bomb costs a life and typically shreds your streak. On dodgeBombs objectives (Bomb Patience wants eight safe passes; Dark Pulse leans on the same discipline), every bomb that exits cleanly advances the goal. On noMiss finales like Tidal Gate and Thunder Gate, a bomb tap is often an instant run-killer.
The main failure mode is swipe overlap: you aim at a valid drop beside a bomb and your tap radius clips the bomb. When bombs and drops share a lane, wait a beat for separation, or tap the valid drop earlier while it is still higher and farther from the bomb’s path. In Endless late waves, treat bomb-dense columns as look-don’t-touch zones and clear safer lanes first.
Phantoms — tap only when visible
Phantoms fade in and out. Tap them only when they are clearly visible. Tapping empty air where a phantom used to be wastes time and often makes you late for the next real drop. Phantom Drops (level 5) introduces the idea; Phantom Storm (level 18) stacks the pressure.
Tactic: track opacity, not hope. If a phantom is dimming, switch attention to any solid drop that is lower. Return when the phantom brightens again. On mixed boards, phantoms are medium priority — below about-to-miss solid drops, above idle high drops. For star runs, phantom whiffs that become misses destroy accuracy; it is better to take a slightly late visible tap than to spam the fade.
Speed drops — surge mid-fall
Speed drops look similar to normal drops but accelerate during the fall. Acceleration (level 8) teaches the lesson; Lightning Round and Abyss levels reuse it at higher density. The mistake is planning a leisurely center tap based on the early slow phase. Instead, commit earlier than usual and accept Excellent if Perfect would require waiting through the surge into the danger zone.
When multiple speed drops spawn, prioritize by current altitude and velocity, not spawn order. The one that surged first may already be the emergency. Height bonus still applies — catching a speed drop high, before the surge, is both safer and more valuable for score.
Tiny drops — precision over panic
Tiny drops shrink the forgiving hit area. Perfect ratings demand calmer aim. Tiny Drops (level 7) and Precision Fire (level 26) are the campaign classrooms. Enlarge your aim time by catching higher: the sprite is still small, but you have more frames to line up. Panic taps at the bottom produce Okay ratings and accidental misses beside the sprite.
On reachScore levels that mix tinies with goldens, do not ignore tinies — each miss breaks streak. Clear tinies with Good-or-better as soon as they enter a comfortable band, then use leftover attention for golden center taps.
Golden drops — score multipliers
Golden drops are shimmery bonus targets. Catching one applies a large score bonus on that tap (an extra 2× of the tap’s points on top of the normal award, so the hit is roughly 3× as valuable as the same rating without gold). Golden Rush (level 12, reachScore 2500) and later score checks lean on these spikes.
Chase goldens when lives are stable and no bomb is adjacent. Do not dive through a bomb lane for gold. During a freeze window, goldens become prime Perfect candidates because you have time to aim center at height.
Freeze drops — three-second slow
Freeze drops appear as icy blue crystal-like targets. Catching one slows active drops for about three seconds and shows a cool overlay. Freeze Frame (level 13) introduces the power-up as a timing tool rather than a raw score item.
Use the freeze window in this order: (1) clear any drop near the bottom, (2) avoid bombs still falling, (3) farm Perfect and Excellent on mid and high drops, especially goldens and tinies. Do not waste the whole freeze staring at one Perfect while another drop exits. If another freeze appears while one is active, grab it if safe — but never collide with bombs to refresh the window.
Mixed boards and priority order
When Chaos Rain, Phantom Storm, Eruption, or late Endless waves mix everything, use a fixed mental priority:
- Never tap bombs; abort bad swipes.
- Save the lowest valid solid or speed drop.
- Tap visible phantoms before they fade if they are next-lowest.
- Spend freeze time on cleanup, then quality.
- Take goldens when the board is under control.
- Aim Perfect on tinies only when you have runway.
That order keeps lives intact — and with three lives, intact runs are what let scoring math from the scoring guide actually matter. Continue with chapter walkthroughs for when each special first appears in Campaign.
