Designing Reaction-Based Games

Reaction games fail when “harder” only means “faster forever.” Useful difficulty teaches new skills: classification, restraint, prioritization.

Difficulty curves

A good curve introduces one pressure variable at a time. Focus Drop’s Calm Seas teaches aim and sway before Storm Season adds objective variety and The Abyss stacks concurrency + decoys.

Why streak systems engage

Streaks create loss aversion: players protect a multiplier even when a risky tap would raise short-term score. That psychology can teach patience — or punish unfairly if streaks break on noise. We cap Focus Drop streaks at 2.5× and add milestone bonuses so recovery remains meaningful.

Risk / reward

Catch-height multipliers (1.8× early vs 0.6× late) and bombs (must not tap) encode risk explicitly. Players choose survival vs score in the same motor act.
